Why do I smell sewer gas in my house?

This is a question that I get several times a year.  There is usually a simple answer.  The majority of time there is a floor drain somewhere in your house that is dried up due to lack of use.  This means that the ptrap no longer contains water.  You may ask, what is a ptrap?  Every fixture drain has a ptrap if you look underneath the sink, it looks like a P laying on its back.  This allows water to stand in the drain forming a seal to keep sewer gas out of your house.

Should I drain my water heater occasionally?

The quick answer is probably not.  If you just got a new water heater installed and you have the time and fortitude to drain and refill it a couple times a year, then sure.  If not, don't worry about it.  The fact is, most water heaters these days use a swirling action to keep sediment from building up.

What is a Thermal Expansion Tank?

What is that small tank above my water heater?  I hear that question a lot.  The answer is it's a thermal expansion tank.  But what is that?  Simply put, when your water heater is on, as it heats the water, it expands (i.e. thermal expansion).  The tank gives that added pressure a place to go instead of building up in your plumbing system.

Brian Wear Plumbing Launches a New Website

Welcome to our new web site!  I'd like to thank Igniting Business for all their hard work and patience.  They do fantastic work and I highly recommend them.  Ben, the owner of Igniting Business, created my first web site years ago and it has served me well as I know this new one will also.  I think I had one of the first plumbing web sites in the Columbia area, and I believe this new me sets the standard.
